Financial Planning 101

Amateurs think about tactics; professionals are concerned with logistics.

This is our guiding principle. Buying stocks or bonds, insurance or GICs is not our concern. Putting the right tools in your hands to accomplish your goals is.

We think of financial planning and goals as like using a map. If you don’t know where you are or where you are going, a map is useless. The first step is to decide where you are.
We don’t use questionnaires to determine this. No, we use the old fashioned method – talking. Our clients know that they can count on a comfortable conversation, quality coffee or tea and a solid exploration of all their financial planning concerns on the path to their financial plan.

Once we know where you are and where you want to be, we then build the solutions. If the concern is retirement – as is often the place – we evaluate timelines, resources and build portfolios appropriately. If the concern is estate planning, we look at insurance policies, account set ups, potential referrals for more complicated legal opinions on things like trusts or corporations.

At the end of the process, you will have a hard copy document, pieced together from all of your concerns addressing things like investments, insurance, banking, etc. There will also be a hand typed report confirming your concerns and commenting on the solution already in place or recommended at that time.

One of our goals is to find efficiencies and if you already have something covered by, say, an insurance policy or some will-planning already accomplished by a lawyer, we will acknowledge that and confirm that this area is already dealt with. However, if there is a lower priced product or a more comprehensive solution, we’ll make sure you are aware and can make an informed decision.

Ultimately, we try to touch on the important things and leave very little to chance. A study came out a while ago that surgical outcomes in hospitals who use checklists are better (fewer complications and fewer fatalities). We believe the same is true with your finances. A checklist doesn’t make anyone smarter, but it does make sure things don’t get overlooked.
