The PNC Christmas Price Index

‘Tis the season to sit back, enjoy some time with friends and family and let things kind of relax – including the ol’ belt!

One bit of Christmas fun every year – for those of us nerdy enough to enjoy it – is the Christmas Price Index. If you’ve never heard of it, it is based on the 12 days of Christmas song. Back in 1984, a financial institution thought it might be fun to figure out how much it would cost to buy someone all of the 12 items on the list – including the lords a’ leaping and the maids a’ milking. They put this together into the Christmas Price Index.

There’s a secondary part which is the ‘True Cost of Christmas’ which buys  all the things on the list as sung in the song – so the partridge gets bought 12 times because it was listed on the first day and then along with the turtle doves on the 2nd day and so on. The turtle doves get purchased 11 times and so on down the list. It gets pretty expensive and I’m not sure what exactly someone does with 22 turtle doves but it is a good bit of fun!

It also goes to explain some of what happens with inflation though. We all know that stamps and cars, houses and meals out used to cost less – but what about ridiculous Christmas items no one would ever purchase?! This is important information, don’t you know?!
